Summary: Here are a couple of procedures you can use to check website links. Broken links can reduce your Page Rank, annoy visitors, and reduce your SERP.

Here are two suggested procedures for finding broken links:

This website link checking utility is nice because the error list it generates shows you what errors the links threw if there were problems with it.

Here are a few examples of common HTTP Status codes you will see:
200: Link is OK.
301: Link has been moved or forwarded permanently.
403: Found but the server has forbidden your request.
404: Not Found, but you are welcome to try again.
500: Internal Server Error.
509: Bandwidth Limit Exceeded.

Method 2 to Check Website Links

You must use the Firefox Browser to use this procedure and be able to check website links.
It is recommended you upgrade to Firefox 6 first before trying this procedure. Here is a link to the Mozilla Firefox upgrade web page: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/update/

Now that Firefox is upgraded, go to the Add-On Directory located here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/

In the Search box – Upper Right, type in: linkchecker (all one word).

Find LinkChecker by Kevin Freitas.

Add / Install to Fire Fox.

Restart Firefox.

On the website you want to check, right click on the page. On the menu, below the 2nd separator, you will find a menu item that says “Check Page Links”

After you click it, a little Blue Dot will appear in the lower right of the Browser frame showing you the total count of the links are being checked. Make a mental note of it.

Check Website Links Color Code

A Green Highlighted link means the link is good, and Red means the link is bad or broken.

A Yellow Highlighted link means the link is either Forwarded or a Forbidden Link.
